Charcoal from sticks collected in controlled burn area near Taylor House, Hambidge Center studio, Rabun County, Georgia, 2016.

Wildfires were spread throughout the southern Appalachians in the fall of 2016.  Hambidge Center in north Georgia was near one of those and controlled burns were done nearby.  During the worst of the fire threats residents and historical artifacts were evacuated from the Center for several days.

I rode along one area of controlled burn with Christine Jason from Hambidge Center.  We stopped in several places to take photographs of the burned woods and so I could collect burned sticks to use for drawing.
